Look to the Light

Jesus Christ is the Light. Look to Him and you will be lead out of the darkness. I know this to be true. I was once in the dark but now I live in His light.

A Broken Pedal

A few days ago I had been biking around with an Elder. It had been raining for most of the day and there was a good amount of rain on the ground. While we were out and about his bike pedal broke off! Fortunately he had been expecting this. He suddenly produced a spare pedal and a wrench from his bag and went to work. “Awesome! This will be an easy fix.” I thought. It didn’t turn out to be that way.

Pedals have two major parts, first the actual pedal that you rest your foot on, and second, the peg it sits on. The pedal broke off and the peg was all that was left. He tugged, twisted, hit, smacked, braced it, did everything he could think of, but nothing got that peg to even budge. It was not going to come out. Well after a good while we decided that if we wanted to get it off our best bet was to go home and get some good tools.

So we packed up our things and got moving. We came up with a brilliant plan to get home. We jammed the pedal back on the peg and just try to use it to get home. For the first 5 minutes it worked out great! We made some good head way.

Then we came across and puddle on the side walk, and this puddle was actually a small lake. It was a couple inches deep and was about 5 feet across. Well being the smart ones we are, we slow down and just cruse across thinking that nothing will happen.

Suddenly I hear behind me a crash, a splash and a very mad Elder. While riding across the “lake” he had hit a bump, lost the pedal, went over his handlebars, and fell face first into the water and mud. It was quite the sight to see.

After confirming he was not badly injured, and had a few laughs, we decided that we would walk the rest of the way home. Once there we again tried to fix the bike but again had no result. It was eventually decided that it would be best to take it to a bike shop and have them do it instead since they had the right tools and could get it off a lot easier than we could. I swear that thing must have been glued in there!

Well we completed the rest of our night and once we were done with everything I sat and reflected upon this event. I saw a parable of life. Have we all in a sense “broke a pedal”? We had things happen in our loves in where either bad things happen to us or we sin.

We are all traveling and trying to get somewhere in this world. Many times we slip up and do something we shouldn’t or in a sense “break”. It can be a big problem at moments. We can kind of know what we need to do but most of the time we don’t really know quite what to do. We don’t have all the experience we need or we don’t quite have all the tools to fix it. But there is one who has all experience and all the tools. That is Jesus Christ.

We can try and do it ourselves, but without His help, we will end up hitting a bump on the ground and going face first in the dirty water. We will be in worse shape than we were before.

I don’t know about you but I’m pretty tired of being soaking wet and covered in mud. You may be going through a hard time and facing a challenge, possibly you need to repent of some wrong doing, or maybe you just want to be a better person. Through the Atonement of Christ all can be made right. Put aside your pride and turn to the Master and Creator.

So when you have a pedal break, don’t try biking on it. Just get it fixed. It will be the best thing you can do.
